The Syzygy of Cinnamon: Tamara Henderson’s Art Exhibition at The Intermission in Piraeus Explores the Connection Between Self & Place

Tamara Henderson’s art exhibition, “The Syzygy of Cinnamon,” is currently on display until July 29th, 2023, at The Intermission in Piraeus, Greece, in partnership with Rodeo Gallery. Artemis Baltoyanni of The Intermission and Sylvia Kouvali of Rodeo Gallery welcome a London-based Canadian artist who has had so far an exciting creative journey, literal and mental, of transformative nature. She has been to Greece before and even sources some of her materials from there. The exhibition’s title, “Syzygy,” is borrowed from the Greek term “Συζυγία,” meaning “yoked together.” It speaks of two entities becoming one and represents the relationship between dualistic archetypes that describe a greater whole, as per Carl Jung.

Tamara Henderson’s interpretation of the term depicts it as a kind of friendship, and it is reflected in the collaboration between her and Australian artist Nell Pearson. Together, they conjured up “The Canberra Character,” a form that emerged from thirteen skeletons that appeared in the night sky.

The exhibition invites the viewers to relate differently to a strange landscape and to witness a reflection of self in it. The thirteen pieces interlink to create five larger figures that describe a picture of a poem of a place: cattail reeds and sweet-grass in a basket, a plasma globe, bitumen, turtle shells, and glass eyes, cinnamon, wool, and wire mesh.

The art exhibition is presented alongside a cycle of five paintings, each of which takes the name of a line from a poem authored by Tamara Henderson. It’s a rare opportunity to immerse oneself in the artist’s interpretation of “Syzygy” and witness her and Pearson’s collaborative vision. “The Syzygy of Cinnamon” is a must-see for anyone interested in contemporary art. Don’t miss it before it ends on July 29th!
